Obituary for Sam Alabaster Sam Alabaster, died July 4, 2018 after a long and successful life at 91. Sam served in the Army in the South Pacific on Guam. He made several lifelong friends there.

Upon returning to the states, he started a small laundry. In the front of the store, he started selling small accessories such as jewelry, wallets, watches, etc. Soon he closed the laundry and opened The Empire Co., a wholesaler of fashion jewelry.

When Elvis hit it big, Sam, who had done some of Elvis’ laundry and knew him as a neighborhood kid, called Elvis and said he would like to make Elvis jewelry. Elvis said he would have to talk to Colonel Parker, which he did, and Sam got the worldwide rights to Elvis jewelry. Eventually, The Empire Co, would become Alabaster Originals selling fashion jewelry nationwide.

Sam, who was also affectionately known as Shimmy, traveled the world, enjoyed painting and tennis but most of all being with family and friends. Sam was the son of the late Morris and Esther Alabaster. He was preceded in death by his sister, Bertha Rosenthal Schneider and brother Jake Alabaster.

He is survived by his sister, Tillie Halpern: Son, Dan Alabaster (Penney): daughter, Arlene Sharfman: grandson, Nathan Sharfman: and his companion, Barbara Williams. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 am Friday, July 6, 2018, at the Levy-Cooper Chapel in Temple Israel Cemetery, 1708 Hernando Road. The family requests any memorials be sent to the charity of their choice.
