Obituary for Sandra Sue Fariss Sandra Sue Click Fariss 81, of Owensboro passed away Wednesday September 26, 2018 under the care of Hospice of Western Kentucky. She was born September 2, 1937 in Jackson County, West Virginia to the late Franklin Monroe Click and Virginia Marie Hartley Click. She graduated from Glennville College (now Glennville State University) with a Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education and Biology.
She obtained a Master’s Degree in Guidance and Counseling, Master’s Degree in Secondary School Supervision and achieved a Rank I teaching certificate from Western Kentucky University. She was a past director of the Longfellow Adult Learning Center for almost twenty five years. She was a Counselor and Instructor of Developmental Studies at Kentucky Wesleyan College.
She was a former Instructor of the Early Childhood Development Program at OCTC. The majority of her career she spent at Longfellow Adult Learning Center where she worked with past Kentucky Governor Julian Carrol and past Owensboro Mayor Jr. Miller to make Longfellow Adult Learning Center “state of the art” which in turn became a program for adults that could be utilized as a model and footprint throughout the State of Kentucky. She was part of a team who created the “state of the art” computer Lab Longfellow where computers first became the latest and greatest tool for learning.
She taught GED night classes to numerous individuals in the Owensboro Area. She taught English as a second language to many non-English speaking immigrants who settled and lived in Owensboro. She also helped countless high school students earn high school credits which enabled them to graduate from high school with a standard diploma.
She tutored high school students who were preparing for the ACT, SAT and ASFAB examinations. She worked closely with the armed forces recruiters of Daviess County to insure all potential enlistees had the necessary educational credentials to enter the military service of their choice. She was a Kentucky Colonel.
She worked with and was part of the direction of the Rick Pitino Shelter. She worked with the Neblett Center of Owensboro. She was a founder and president for numerous terms of the Owensboro – Daviess County Literacy Council.
She served on the board of directors of the Free Clinic. Sue was preceded in death by her parents and a brother. Roger Ronald “Sam” Click of Ripley, West Virginia.
She is survived by three children; Julie Fariss Cavin of Cape Coral, Florida, William “Bill” Fariss of Owensboro Kentucky and Allyson Fariss-Greene (Ray) of Nashville Tennessee. She is survived by four grandchildren; William Travis Fariss, Chase Philip Cavin, Madison Mackenzie Fariss, Luke Edward Harris and one great-grandchild Lilah Fariss. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
She was a member of First Baptist Church. Our mother taught us to love, care and spend time with all types of people; no matter their income, race, intelligence or status in life. She said “the true measure of a person was on display where one spent quality time caring for and helping a person in need whom could do absolutely nothing for you”.
