Sarah Betty Lou was preceded in death by her parents, Silvion Henson, Sr. and Sallie Poe Henson; 3 sisters: Tiny Mae Hughes, Drusilla Houston Townsend and Cora Amanda McGee; a brother ~ Silvion Henson, Jr. and a special nephew, Anthony D. Davis. Sarah Betty Lou accepted Christ at an early age. She joined Elkhorn Primitive Baptist Church where she actively and faithfully served until her health failed.
Sarah Betty Lou successfully completed elementary and high school through Montgomery County Public School System. Sarah Betty Lou then attended Jackson College for Negro Teachers in Jackson, Mississippi where she received the degree of Bachelor of Science in Education in 1955. After receiving her degree, Sarah began her teaching career.
She taught for over 27 years in 3 counties in Mississippi: Carroll, Montgomery and Choctaw. Sarah Betty Lou was united in holy matrimony to Losey Carter on June 29, 1969 in Kimichael, MS. Sarah often said to him, “It takes more to feed me than to clothe me”.
We found that to be true. Sarah Betty Lou was a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. In 2004, she received a certificate and a trophy for 50 years of dedicated service. She was also a committed member of Heroines of Jericho for 30 years.
Sarah Betty Lou spent her leisure time reading articles in newspapers, reading books, collecting recipes on baking and canning, sharing photos, traveling, driving others to appointments, serving communities with their projects and always humming or singing a song. Sarah Betty Lou’s favorite testimonial songs were: “I Am a Living Testimony”; “If I Can Help Somebody, Then My Living Will Not Be in Vain”; “May The Work I’ve Done Speak For Me”. Sarah Betty Lou leaves to cherish her memory a loving and devoted husband, Losey Carter; a brother-in-law, Ezell Carter (Annie Lou) of French Camp, MS; 2 sisters-in-law: Ora Lee McAlpine of Mobile, AL and Earlie Henson of Biloxi, MS; step children: William George “Sony” Edwards (Velma) of Jackson, MS; and Mary Joyce Sallis (Minister McArthur) of Sallis, MS; 4 grandchildren; special niece, Shirley T. Copeland of Chicago, IL; friend and confident, Laura Norwood Davis of Carrollton, MS; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
