Selma “Sally”‘s Obituary Selma S. “Sally” Schmit, age 88, formerly of Bellwood, died Saturday, March 23, 2019 at David Place in David City. Mass of Christian Burial is 10:30 am Thursday at St. Peter’s Catholic in Bellwood. Visitation is on Wednesday from 5-7 pm at St. Peter’s Church with a Vigil service to follow at 7:00 pm.

Visitation continues on Thursday from 9:30 am until service time. Interment is in St. Peter and Mary’s/Presentation Cemetery. Selma Schmit was born July 25, 1930 in Shelby, NE to Fred and Sophie (Dobesh) Polacek.

She attended Cottonwood School near Surprise and graduated from David City High School in 1946. Selma took normal training to be a teacher. She taught school at 3 different country schools in Butler County for over a period of 5 years.

Selma married Dwaine Schmit on March 29, 1951 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Shelby. Selma was a farmwife raising their seven children. She loved gardening, quilting, and traveling.

They retired to Meridian Gardens in Columbus in 2016 Selma was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, the St. Joseph’s Altar Society, local Extension Club, Mother of Twins Club, and Quilting Club. Selma was a 4-H leader and a member of the Platte Valley Cattlewomen Auxiliary. She dearly loved her grandchildren and great grandchildren Selma is survived by: Daughter Sandra (Sod) Rech of David City Daughter Janet (Galen) Bock of Bellwood Daughter Barbara (Dan) Petrik of David City Daughter Victoria (Jerry) Johnson of Green Valley, AZ Son Nick (Cheryl) Schmit of Bellwood Son Joe Schmit of Bellwood Daughter Jacqueline (Patrick) Hoeft of David City 14 Grandchildren 17 Great Grandchildren Numerous Nieces and Nephews Brother Delmar (Evelyn) Polacek of Surprise Sister-in-laws Marie Homan and Cecelia Smith of Omaha Sister-in-law Jeanie (Theo) Kayser-Jones of San Francisco, CA Brother-in-laws Harry (Sharon) Schmit and Loran (Rene) Schmit of Bellwood She is preceded in death by: Parents Fred and Sophie Polacek Husband Dwaine Schmit Nephew Mike Polacek Nephew Tony Homan Niece Catalina Schmit Brother-in-laws: George Homan, Thomas Smith, and Bill Kayser Sister-in-law Bernice (Les) Peck In lieu of flowers, Memorials are suggested to St. Joseph Church of rural Bellwood, Bellwood Volunteer Fire Department, or to the wishes of the family.
