On Friday, May 3, 2019, Sidney L. Smith, Jr., D.D.S., loving husband, father, and grandfather, passed away at the age of 63. “Doc” was born June 18, 1955 in Memphis, Tennessee. He was the son of the late Sidney and Helen Patton Smith.

Doc was a 1973 graduate of Wynne High School where he excelled in athletics, especially football. After receiving his Bachelor’s degree in zoology from Arkansas State University in 1977, he was accepted into the dentistry program at the University of Tennessee where he graduated in 1981. In 1974 Doc married his high school sweetheart, Rhonda Williams.

Together they raised two children, Kim Bennett (Nathan) and Kevin Smith (Amber). After graduating from dental school, Doc and Rhonda traveled throughout Arkansas, searching for the best place to establish Doc’s dental practice and to raise their children. They decided to begin their lives in Bald Knob; the attitude of the people of this close-knit community made their decision easy.

His dental career lasted 38 years. Doc loved to work, and he truly loved his patients. A true Bald Knob Bulldog fan, Doc would be seen running the clock at Bulldog football and basketball games.

He was the proud father who was on the sidelines watching his children, Kim and Kevin, participate in all sports. Doc even traveled throughout the state refereeing sporting events. Doc was an avid Razorback fan, and he loved spending time with his family on Greers Ferry Lake.

Doc also possessed a love of hummingbirds which visited outside his office windows each year. Doc’s true passion, however, was his grandchildren. He was “Papa Doc” to his five grandchildren: Keegan and Rylan Smith, Karlie Cochran, and Camden and Kendal Bennett.

Spending time with his family was Doc’s true joy. Dr. Sidney Smith, Jr. will be remembered as a soulmate to his wife Rhonda; a loving father to Kim, Kevin, and their spouses; a remarkable grandfather to Keegan, Rylan, Karlie, Camden, and Kendal; and a wonderful brother to his sister Sherrye Bounds and her husband Daniel. Visitation will be held Monday, May 6, 2019 from 6:00-8:00 PM at Powell Funeral Home in Bald Knob.

Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, May 7, 2019 at 3:00 PM at the Powell Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in the Shady Grove Cemetery by Powell Funeral Home, Bald Knob – Judsonia. www.
