Obituary for Spyros “Spiro” Sevis Spyros “Spiro” C. Sevis, of Whitehall, Ohio died peacefully, surrounded by his family on May 22, 2018. He was 85 years old. Spyros is survived by his wife of 50 years Phyllis (Papadimitriou) Sevis; his children, Chris and Nikolina (Georgievska) Sevis and special son John Sevis; brother and sister- in-law Dimitrios and Vickie Papadimitriou; sister-in–law Vasiliki Sevenoff; cousin Angelo Slabakis; his beloved grandchildren Alexander and Yanni Sevis; and many other nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his sister, Catherine Osborne and brother, James C. Sevenoff. Spyros Sevis was born on May 10, 1933, in Goumenissa, Greece to the late Christos and Maria (Slabakis) Sevis. In 1952, he immigrated to the United States following in the footsteps of his father and uncle and settled in Columbus with his mother, brother and sister who had come before him.
Spyros was a long-time restaurateur in Columbus managing or owning the Tic Toc Diner, Garden Restaurant, Congress Inn, and Spiro’s at Trabue and McKinley. His recipes are kept alive by his brother and sister-in-law, Dimitrios and Vickie Papadimitriou and their daughter Dina, at Spiro’s Plaza Café. For over 40 years customers have enjoyed his Chicken & Noodles on Thursdays and Potato Soup on Fridays.
Spyros was a hard-working immigrant who lived the American dream. His greatest happiness was going on vacations with his family and he was able to take his grandchildren to visit his beloved birthplace of Goumenissa, Greece on several occasions. He was a member and supporter of The Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral.
Visitation will be on Monday, May 28, 2018 at the O.R. WOODYARD CO. SOUTH CHAPEL, 1346 S. High Street from 4-8 p.m. Trisagion Service will be at 7:30 p.m. The funeral service will be on Tuesday 10:30 a.m. at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 555 N. High Street, where family will receive friends one hour prior in the Cathedral. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Garden, 5600 E. Broad Street.
