Susan Jane (Carrithers) Strauss, age 93, of Toledo, Ohio passed away on November 23, 2018 at the Lakes of Monclova, Maumee, Ohio. She was born on June 25, 1925 in Toledo, OH to parents Robert Carrithers and Bertha (Dawes) Carrithers. Susan attended Harvard Elementary, Libbey High school and graduated from Miami University at Oxford in June, 1947.

She later earned a second degree from the University of Toledo… Read More » which gave her the opportunity to teach kindergarten at Union Elementary in Maumee, Ohio for 28 years. She retired in 1984 which gave her time to pursue her many and varied interests.
Susan loved to learn and experience new things throughout her life. The summer after high school she took a bus down to Mexico City , by herself, to enroll in college classes and teach English to the residents. She had real compassion for the various communities where she lived thru the years.
She was always involved in committees, volunteering, and classes of interest to her. Susan was a life long member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church where she founded and directed Saints Alive social group for seniors. She also served on the vestry at St. Paul’s’, was chairman of the alter guild and the men’s’ department of the popular St. Paul’s’ rummage sale, and Sunday school teacher for many years.
Susan was a member of the Up River Book Club, Park Ridge Garden Club, Symphony League, and she volunteered at the Walcott Museum. Her interests included oil painting, golf, antiques ,elder hostels and all types of music. She enjoyed playing the piano and the dulcimer.
Left to cherish Susan’s memory are her daughters; Kathryn (Joseph) Rainer of Onsted, MI and Leslie Milauc of Maumee, OH, grandchildren; Ann (Jon) Farnsworth, Joseph (Andrea) Rainer and Jeffrey (Omega) Rainer, and Emily Milauc as well as eleven great grandchildren. Susan was preceded in death by her loving husband, Robert, her parents, and older brother, James Carrithers. Family and friends are invited to visit from 5 to 8 P.M. on Thursday, November 29, 2018 at the Maison-Dardenne Walker Funeral Home, 501 Conant St. Funeral Services will be held on Friday, November 30, 2018 at 11 A.M. at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 310 Elizabeth St, Maumee, OH 43537.
Interment to follow at Ft. Meigs Cemetery, Perrysburg,Ohio. There will be a luncheon at the church following the graveside service.
