Obituary for Suzann Estabrook Brooke Suzann Estabrook Brooke, 79, of Traverse City, passed away unexpectedly Friday, October 5, 2018 at her home. Sue was born on Wednesday, February 15, 1939 to the late Chauncey Uriah “Chuck” and Marie Rose “Dolly” (Peters) Estabrook. Following her graduation from Grosse Pointe High School, she proudly continued her education at the University of Michigan, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in Education.

While at the University, Sue met the love of her life and soulmate when introduced by mutual friends to Lewis Brooke, Jr., while standing in the middle of the “Diag” on a bright, sunny day. This was the beginning of a lifelong love and partnership. Sue and Lew were married on Saturday, August 25, 1962.

Avid enthusiasts of the outdoors, the two soon discovered the natural treasures of the north. After spending increasing amounts of time there, they decided to make their home in Traverse City in 1968. Lew became a well-respected member of the local legal community, serving in both private practice and as a prosecuting attorney.

Sue became a valued member of the Traverse City Area Public Schools family. In all, she enjoyed a 36-year career as a Special Education teacher, with most of her time at Traverse City Senior High (which later became Traverse City Central High School). She retired in 2001, and some years later, also served on the TCAPS School Board.

Sadly, in 2002, Lew lost his battle with lung cancer and passed away. In addition to outdoor recreation, Sue had several other passions. A loving “mom” to many dogs and cats throughout her life, she was relentlessly dedicated to supporting a variety of animal rescue organizations.

Sue loved Michigan football. All of her fall Saturdays were spent loudly cheering “Go Blue! ” for the Wolverines.

Sue was also highly active in politics, proudly supporting the Democratic Party and helping organize many grassroots efforts for the party locally over the years. She was bold and passionate, yet equally tender and loving. Sue was rich with the love and admiration of many friends, family members, students, colleagues, and community members over the years.

She was fond of the saying, “Our fingerprints don’t fade from the lives we touch. Remember me”. In Sue’s case, her fingerprints will not soon fade, and we will indeed remember and miss her intensely.

Sue is survived by her loving son Lewis “Tres” Brooke, III and his adoring wife Melissa, both of Traverse City; and her grandchildren, Lewis “Quaid” Brooke, IV of Traverse City, and Taylor Alyson Williams of Kingsley, both of whom she was incredibly proud. Sue is also survived by her dear brother Robert (Patricia) Estabrook of Clinton Township. While Sue was preceded in death by her beloved husband Lew in 2002, the two are together again at last, watching over us all.

A celebration of her life will take place at a later date among friends and family members. For those desiring to honor and remember Sue through a monetary contribution, the family would suggest making a donation in her name to an animal rescue organization of your own choosing.
