OBITUARY Sylvia Sumiko Honmyo December 17, 1927 – January 20, 2019 Born December 1927 in Wahiawa, Oahu, Hawaii, Sylvia moved to Japan with her parents and siblings in early 1942 shortly before the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Sylvia returned to the United States in 1952, to marry Jay Yoshiro Honmyo, a newly graduated pharmacist. Settling and living the remainder of her life in Vancouver, Washington, she and Jay raised 3 daughters, Susan, Sandra and Sarah.

After the unexpected death of her husband in 1970, Sylvia obtained her registered nurses’ degree, had a long career primarily at Fort Vancouver Acute Skilled Nursing Center, and successfully reared her 3 daughters single-handedly. All her adult life, Sylvia was a committed and faithful servant of God. Her Japanese name, Sumiko, means Child of Goodness, which describes her heart and life perfectly Sylvia was preceded in death by her husband, Jay, her mother Sono, her father Juyhei, her brothers, Kazuma and Kazuya, and her sister Hideko.

She is survived by her 3 daughters, Susan (Paul) Fessenden, Sandra (Paul) Dahl and Sarah (Lawrence) Trimble, her youngest brother Toshihiro (Ichiyo) Fujishima, and 9 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. As requested, there will not be a formal memorial services. In honor of Sylvia’s life, which was marked by her love for the Lord and unconditional love for her family and friends, monetary donations may be made to the Salmon Creek United Methodist Church at 12217 NE Hwy 99, Vancouver WA 98686.
