Thelma was born December 31, 1919 on the family farm by New Salem, Kansas. She was the fifth child born to Benjamin Elijah and Edna (McBeth) Sickles.

She was raised near New Salem and educated through the eighth grade at the New Salem School located in the town. After she completed 8th grade, Thelma left the family farm and moved to Winfield, where she began working for the Heron Family Laundry that was located on 5th Street in Winfield. At age twenty, Thelma moved to Kansas City, Missouri with the Heron family and continued in their employ.

She later began working for Mills Mutual Insurance where she was employed until her retirement in 1984. She continued to work part time for Mills Mutual for several years following her retirement because, as she said, she “…wasn’t doing anything else”. Thelma never married and although she lived in Kansas City for most of her life, she remained close with her brothers and sisters and their families.

Thelma took special enjoyment in her numerous nieces and nephews, all of whom she loved to tease. She often vacationed with her siblings and their families. In her younger years, her ornery disposition made her a favorite aunt for her nieces and nephews, who have many fond memories of their time spent with “Aunt Dolly”.

Thelma was a long-time member of the First Baptist Church of Kansas City, Missouri and was involved in activities there until she moved to Winfield in 2011 to be near her brother Warren Sickles, her sister Edna Louise Wilson, and their families. After residing in the assisted living center at Good Samaritan and then in the health care residence at Winfield Rest Haven, Thelma moved to Cumbernauld Village in August of 2017 and resided there until her passing. In addition to her parents, Thelma was preceded in death by a sister, Helen Rising, and her brothers, Benjamin K. Sickles, Gale Sickles, and Harley “Tod” Sickles.

She is survived by her brother, J. Warren Sickles and his wife, Gloria L. of Winfield; her sister, Edna Louise Wilson of Winfield; and numerous nieces and nephews. Graveside memorial services will be held Monday, December 31, 2018 at 10:00 A.M. at New Salem Cemetery. Miles Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.
