OBITUARY Thelma Layne Roakes October 5, 1934 – September 9, 2018 Thelma Layne Roakes, 83, of Lynchburg passed away Sunday, September 9, 2018, at the Guggenheimer Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was the wife of Clark Morgan Roakes. Born October 5, 1934, in Campbell County, she was the daughter of the late Robert Lee Layne and the late Bertha Wood Layne.

Thelma was a retired registered nurse for Dr. Culley Lippard and was a member of Beulah Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, Thelma was preceded in death by two brothers, Bruce Layne and Edward Lee Layne; two sisters, Margaret L. English and Pauline L. Litchford; and one granddaughter, Kelly McCallum. In addition to her husband, Thelma is survived by her children, Scott Roakes (Geraldine) of Moundville, AL, Janice McCallum (Henry) of Chadron, NE, Laura McCauley of Midlothian and Christopher Roakes (Monica) of Roanoke; nine grandchildren, Matthew Roakes (Megan), Russell Roakes, Reggie Roakes, Holly Thrasher, Kara Clark, Doug McCallum (Breanna), Greg McCallum, Finn Mroz-Roakes and Jonah Mroz-Roakes; three great grandchildren, Jake Roakes, Owen Roakes and Jeremy McCallum; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be conducted 11:30 a.m., Thursday, September 13, 2018, at Fort Hill Memorial Park with Dr. Dennis Hollandsworth officiating. Visitation will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Beulah Baptist Church or a charity of one’s choice.
