Obituary for Theodore Carroll Theodore “Ted” John Carroll, aged 70 years, from Kalona (formerly from Whiting, Indiana) passed away on December 7, 2018 at his home at Kalona, Iowa. Theodore was born on April 4, 1948 in East Chicago, Indiana to Theodore Roosevelt and Helen Theresa Carroll. Ted grew up in Whiting, Indiana and attended Whiting High School.

He was Confirmed in the Catholic Church in 1960 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Whiting. Ted proudly enlisted in the US Army in 1966 during the Vietnam War in a time where it was becoming unpopular to do so. He was trained at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

He served with the 44th Medical Brigade under the 9th Infantry Division in Vietnam. During his time in the Army, he received and Army Meritorious Unit Commendation, the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Ribbon, and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. Ted was Honorably Discharged from the Army in 1972.

Shortly after leaving the Army, Ted was a Merchant Marine and worked on ships on Lake Michigan. Ted accepted Jesus Christ as his Saviour and attended the First Baptist Church of Hammond, Indiana for many years. He was involved in the Bus Ministry and the Fishermen’s Club.

In 1974, Ted married Judith Upchurch and together they had one son. In 1979, Ted married Lorie Ann Kuenzi- together they had four children. Ted was proud to be a Christian and read his Bible every day.

The joy of his life was going to see his grandchildren every week. He was an avid birdwatcher and loved observing nature. He was our family cook, helped us when we were sick, and he was a hard worker.

Ted will always be remembered for his Bible lessons in which he would teach his children and others in the family the way of the Lord. Being originally raised as a member of the Catholic church, Ted obtained a lifelong love for religious art and hand painted many sculpture pieces. The funeral service for Ted will be at the home of his son at 839 S Marion Ave in Washington, Iowa on December 14, 2018.

Visitation will begin at 10am and the funeral service will be held at 11am. After the service, Military Honors will be given in his memory at Elm Grove Cemetery, provided by the American Legion Post #29, where the Flag he proudly served will be presented to his wife. Family and friends are encouraged to attend.

After the Military Honors have been completed, family and friends are invited back to the home of his son for a reception. His cremains will be taken to his home in Kalona. The funeral service will be officiated by Rev.

Joseph Brown. Ted is survived by his wife of 39 years, Lorie Ann (Kuenzi) Carroll, his five children, Robert Lee Carroll (with Judy), Helen of Whiting, Ted (Charity) Carroll of Portage, Joseph of Iowa City, and John (Patricia) of Washington, Iowa, and his three grandchildren, Sarah, Angela, and John II. He was preceded in death his mother, Helen Janik.
