OBITUARY Thomas Kohn Barnes Jr. October 2, 1942 – January 28, 2019 LEXINGTON – A memorial service for Thomas Kohn Barnes, Jr., 76, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, February 2, 2019 at Trinity Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Friday, February 1, 2019 at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel. Mr. Barnes passed away Monday, January 28, 2019 peacefully at home.

Born in Greenville, S.C., he was the son of the late Thomas Kohn Barnes, Sr. and Elizabeth Brooks Barnes. Tom graduated from Conway High School, received a BA from St. Andrews Presbyterian College and also served in the U.S. Army Reserve at Fort Jackson. He served as a Deputy Director of Health and Human Services for the state of South Carolina and retired in 1999.

He was also the interim director of the SC State Museum from 2000-2002. He was a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church, where he served as deacon and was currently serving as an elder of the church. He was also a member of the Columbia Oyster Club for 30+ years, Palmetto A’s of South Carolina Model A Ford Club and received the Order of the Silver Crescent from Governor Jim Hodges in 1999.

Tom lived in Horrell Hill for 35 years and moved to Lexington in 2014 to be closer to his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed trips to Ocean Isle Beach, flying his RC planes, hunting, fishing, and driving his Model A “Miss Lizzy”. Tom was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.

Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Judith Jessup Barnes of Lexington; son, Thomas Kohn Barnes III of Lexington; daughter, Suzanne Barnes English (Beau) of Lexington; grandchildren, Greyson Munroe English of Lexington, John “Brooks” English III of Lexington and Caroline Elizabeth Barnes of Columbia; brothers, Eric Barnes of Portland Oregon and Marshall Barnes (Judy) of Greenville; several nephews and nieces; and beloved dog, Marley Barnes.
