Obituary for Thomas “Mike” Michael Green Thomas “Mike” M. Green, age 73 of Lake, passed away Tuesday, September 25, 2018 at the North Woods Nursing Center in Farwell. Mike was born the son of Glenn and Shirley (Thomas) Green on December 22, 1944 in Lansing. He faced many health challenges in his early days and continued that fight to the very end of his life, delaying the inevitable as long as he could.
In his youth his family spent many summer weekends at the old cabin located near Lake George. On August 5, 1972 he married Nancy Snyder, who predeceased him on December 8, 2009. Mike then was united in marriage to Sue E. Walters on January 4, 2014.
He had worked for MDOT first as a Technician before transitioning over to the Real Estate Division. During the middle of his MDOT career he was instrumental in the establishment of a union to assist his fellow coworkers in their efforts to have better working conditions and more consistent rules. The skills that Mike learned while working for the MDOT Real Estate Division would help him realize his passion for the Real Estate business.
Mike moved full time from the Charlotte/Lansing area in 1996. He became a partner and co-owner of Fairchild and Green Real Estate in Lake George that same year; having recently sold his business in December of 2017. Mike had a competitive spirit and strived to be the best at any of his endeavors, whether working, hunting, fishing, playing softball, golfing or just plain playing.
He loved playing cards, especially Euchre and Cribbage. He enjoyed the hunting excursions usually at the family’s property near Lake George with his late cousin Roger and his cousin Dave, brother James and everyone else that wanted to tag along. During one of those excursions while helping his father to his shanty, Mike’s dad Glenn was stricken with a massive heart attack.
Although Mike tried desperately to save him, Glenn was beyond help according to the Doctors. Following his father’s passing Mike was solidly devoted to his mother. He would call her almost every day and frequently stop in to check on her to see if she needed anything.
Mike was very civic minded and gave of his time and talents to the Lincoln Twp. Fire Department. He served on the Fire Department for 2000 to 2010, having risen in the department to become a Lieutenant and Training Officer.
Mike enjoyed traveling; he and Sue enjoyed visiting Florida as often as they could. Mike will be remembered most for his never give up attitude. He is survived by his wife, Sue; son Douglas (Jenny) Green of Battle Creek; his mother Shirley Green of Charlotte; a brother James (Susan Anderson) Green of Grand Ledge; his grandchildren Brendan and Kailin.
Also surviving are Douglas’ mother, Sherry Ritchie Green of Bellevue; Sue’s daughter Kelly (Eric) Cotton and their sons Avery and Evan of Clare and a step nephew Jacob (Sarah) Walters of Indianapolis, Indiana. Visitation and services will be held at the Farwell Chapel of Stephenson-Wyman Funeral Home. Visitation will be held on Thursday, September 27, 2018 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 P.M. Visitation will also be held from 10 A.M. until the time of service at 11 A.M. on Friday, September 28, 2018; services will be led by Pastor Jeremiah Ketchum.
Burial will take place in the Freeman Twp. Cemetery with a luncheon to follow at the Lake George Boosters Club where Mike was a member. Memorials are suggested to the Lake George Boosters Club or to the Activities Fund at the North Woods Nursing Center.
