Thomas’ Obituary Thomas H. Schmidt, 67, of Port Austin, passed away on January 18, 2019. Tom was born in Bad Axe on March 3, 1951 to the late Willet “Pete” and Jean Schmidt. Tom graduated from Port Austin High School in 1969.

He attended Alma College before returning to Port Austin to take over the family business. Tom was president of Finan and Schmidt Insurance from 1979 until the time of his death. Tom was an outstanding athlete in high school; playing basketball, baseball and football.

He also played baseball on the Sunday Huron County Men’s League. He was active in the community. He served as director of Port Austin State Bank and was a member of the Port Austin Chamber of Commerce.

Tom was instrumental for raising money for the fireworks; making it the finest display in the Thumb. He loved outdoor and nature. He was a member of the Audobon Society, Sierra Club, Greenpeace and Smithsonian.

Tom will be greatly missed by family, friends and the people of Port Austin. He will be remembered for his witty sense of humor and his generous heart for always being willing to help someone if they needed it. He is survived by his brother, Stephen (Denise) Schmidt of Port Austin; sister, Belma Gorang of Port Austin; sister-in-law, Becky Schmidt of Spring Lake; many nieces, nephews and cousins and his special friend, Anna Ballou of Kinde.

Tom was preceded in death by his brother, Peter J. Schmidt and his brother-in-law, William Gorang. Per Tom’s wishes, cremation has taken place at Sunset Valley Crematory in Bay City. Family and friends are invited to celebrate Tom’s Life at an open house at The Bank Restaurant in Port Austin on Saturday, January 26, 2019 from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 3 p.m. Memorials may be offered to the Port Austin Township Library.
