Timothy Grove, of Center City, Philadelphia, lost his battle with brain cancer on July 20th, 2018. He fought hard for two and a half years. Tim was born in Harrisburg’s Polyclinic Hospital on October 18, 1964.
Tim is survived by his brother Michael N. Grove of Harrisburg, Peggy A. Grove of Harrisburg. David E. Grove and his wife Anne Grove of Carlisle. Tim was married to Tammy Yan for 29 years and they resided in Philadelphia.
Tim is also survived by 30 cousins and 9 aunts and uncles from all over the United States and England. Tim was a precocious toddler and learned to read on his own before age two. He had a great sense of humor and loved words, his first original pun was aimed at his mother who was expecting Tim’s brother in a few months and was not working.
Tim was trying to tell his Mom something and his Mom told him he wasn’t making any sense cents and Tim’s immediate comeback was that “well you don’t make any dollars” Tim’s greatest talents were in Math, he attended classes in advanced math and science at Johns Hopkins beginning in 6th grade. Tim graduated from Mechanicsburg High School in 1982. Tim was as an early entrant to Carnegie Mellon University and received his BS in mathematics and computer science.
Tim worked in software development both in North Carolina’s Research Triangle Area as well as in the California Silicon Valley. He and his wife Tammy were expats for five years in Canada, Germany and France. They loved to travel and were fortunate to be centrally based in Europe.
Tim and his brother Michael played Little League in Mechanicsburg. Their father David coached and their Mom Peggy helped with scheduling and fundraising for the league. Tim often made the AllStars.
Tim attained his Eagle Scout Level at the age of 14. The entire family was involved in the Boy Scout Pack 80 in Mechanicsburg. Tim, his Dad David, Brother Michael and Wife Tammy all loved hockey and were Hershey Bears and Montreal Canadiens fans.
They all watched football, soccer and hockey games together both live and on TV. Tim helped behind the scenes for the Dauphin County Democratic Committee helping his Mom with silent auctions, program books, dinners and keeping the list of volunteers and committee people up to date. He also served on the Election board for Ward 2 in Susquehanna Township by helping train the poll workers and Judges of Election how to use the new computer systems.
He was the first person most voters met as they entered the polling place and set the tone for their voting experience and everyone loved him, according to Sandy Nevius who was the Judge of Elections. Tim was a volunteer for the Dauphin County Wildwood Park & Benjamin Olewine Nature Center. MaryLou McDowell, former Board President, asked Tim to help sort out their computer problems and train the staff.
Tim helped to bring their system into the 21st Century and created many new programs that helped grow the membership of the Center. Tim also shared the love of Birdwatching with his father David who was the Lead Data Compiler for the Waggoner’s Gap IBA. They spent many hours atop Waggoner’s Gap counting Hawks and other raptors.
Friends can visit with Tim’s Mom and his brother Michael this week on Wednesday or Thursday between the hours of 4-7 or Saturday between 2-4 at Peggy’s home on Italian Lake, 2920 Parkside Lane. Funeral arrangements will be private. A dedication of a bench to be placed at the Wildwood Park will be announced at a later date.
Tim will be missed by those closest to him as well as those whose lives he touched.
