We are saddened to say goodbye to our wonderful Aunti, Ursula Nixon, who passed away at her home on October 4, 2018. She loved to say she was an “unclaimed jewel” and we loved to say she was an amazing, beautiful, generous, funny and loving person. Ursula was born in Portland on December 20, 1927 to Percy H. and Catherine U. O’Donnell Nixon and she graduated from Cathedral High School.

She retired after 35 years from New England Telephone Co. to take care of her mother. She went on to volunteer at St. Vincent’s Soup Kitchen and The Good Cause Thrift Shop. She was also a member of the Irish American Club and NET Pioneers.

Ursula enjoyed her life and was able to travel to wherever she and her good friends chose. They had cruise ship adventures, trips to Ireland, Spain, Alaska, Hawaii and many other memorable places. Ursula loved keeping busy, from attending Sacred Heart mass daily, joining the walkers at the Maine Mall, lunch with the girls, and staying at home knitting, watching her soap operas or making needhams and peanut butter balls.

Ursula was always grateful to the group of strangers who rescued her from her car out of Casco Bay at the age of 84. She was never able to thank them because of her injuries which she never fully recovered from. Ursula was predeceased by her parents; brothers, John (Chic) and Bobby; sister, Frances; several nieces and nephews; and too many good friends.

She is survived by her nieces and nephews, good friends and care givers. Special thanks to the wonderful staff at VNA Hospice “Living Angels” whom Ursula enjoyed as much as they enjoyed her. Most special thanks to her beloved niece Franci who treasured being able to give Ursula the quality of life she deserved – to stay happy and safe in her own home.

In lieu of flowers please donate to St. Vincent’s Soup Kitchen or VNA Hospice of Maine. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, October 10, 2018 at Sacred Heart Church, 65 Mellen St., Portland with burial to follow at Calvary Cemetery in South Portland.
