Vernon James Holmes, 86, reached the final finish line in his home on Friday, July 13th, 2018 where he died from kidney failure. He leaves his wife Dorothy “Dottie” Warmack, daughter Deanna Meinke and husband Gary, son Daniel Holmes and grandson Tyson Holmes. He was preceded in death by parents Jesse Holmes and Faye Binkley, and first wife Bonnie Holmes.

Helen Long raised him, and her daughter Francis Long, during 10 years of childhood, and both also preceded him in death. Born in Denver, Colorado March 11, 1932. He graduated from East High School and served four years in the Navy as an aviation machinist’s mate on naval airships and airplanes during the Korean War.

In 1960, he graduated with a college degree in business by attending classes at night for seven years while working full-time and raising a family. He retired as a district manager from Wilson Supply in 1994. Vern started drag racing during the summers and set a National Hot Rod Association speed record in 1955 in Great Bend, Kansas.

His love for cars evolved into a lifetime passion for building hotrods and traveling with friends throughout the U.S. He joined the Denver Timing Association in 1954 and was instrumental in resurrecting the organization in the early 1990’s which continues to be active today. He was a long-time member of the Early Ford V8 car club and founding member of the National Hot Rod Association and the Denver Roadsters.

A celebration of life will be planned by the family and friends. Memorial gifts can be made to the Denver Rescue Mission at PO Box 5206, Denver, CO 80127. On the memo line please indicate “Memorial Gift for Vernon Holmes”.
