Virginia’s Obituary Virginia Ann Kapernick, age 93, of Havre, passed away on Tuesday, March 12, 2019 at Northern Montana Care Center due to natural causes. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held on Friday, March 12, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. at First Lutheran Church. Virginia requested that memorials be directed to Flathead Lutheran Bible Camp, First Lutheran Church, or donor’s choice.

Virginia was born July 29, 1925, to Clara and Gilbert Omlie in Havre Montana. She grew up in Havre and loved teaching Sunday school and singing in the church choir. Virginia graduated from Havre High School in 1943 and graduated from Concordia college, Moorhead, Minnesota in 1947 with Bachelor of Arts degree.

She taught one year at Wolf Point High School. In 1948 Virginia married Joe Kapernick. They moved to Bozeman while Joe completed his degree in civil engineering.

Their daughter Karen was born while in Bozeman. The family then moved to Helena where Joe worked on the construction of the Canyon Ferry Dam. Several years later, Joe accepted an engineering position in Chicago, Illinois to work on the interstate highway system.

During this time their son Doug was born. Virginia and Joe later divorced, and Virginia and the children moved back to Havre where she taught English at Havre High School. She retired from teaching in 1983.

The prior year, Virginia’s mother Clara passed away. She then became the primary caregiver for her father until he passed away in 1997 at age 100. Virginia enjoyed knitting and crocheting afghans for family and friends.

She frequently traveled to Minnesota to visit her children, four grandchildren and 8 great- grandchildren. She was member of Delta Kappa Gamma and the Bear Paw Retired Educators. She was an active member of First Lutheran church, as well as WELCA, Esther Circle, and the Thursday afternoon Bible study group.

Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, her former husband, brother James Omlie, brother-in-law Dale Skaalure, sister Lorraine Skaalure and son-in-law Ernie Swihart. Virginia is survived by her daughter Karen Swihart of Minnetonka, MN; son Doug (Nancy) Kapernick of St. Peter, MN; and brother Don (Shirley) Omlie of Fort Collins, CO.
