Obituary for Virginia L. “Lala” Payne Virginia L. “Lala” Payne, 94, of Pittsburg, Kansas died 6:25pm Monday, September 24, 2018 at Via Christi Village in Pittsburg, Kansas. Lala was born December 27, 1923 in Frontenac, Kansas the daughter of Earl and Mary Ann (Monahan) Morey. She attended Sacred Heart Catholic School and graduated from Frontenac High School in 1941.
She married Edwin L. “Epp” Payne on May 15, 1943 in Pacific Grove, CA and was his loving wife and partner until his death on June 29, 2009. Lala was an active and devout parishioner at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church; a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Altar Society; the Red Cross; and was a Pink Lady. Lala is survived by her children Mary (Mike) Gilmore, Michael (Kay) Payne, Christine (Scott) Crain, Barbara (Dave) Mathews, and Lee Ann (Ron) Yartz; 11 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren, in addition to numerous nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly.
Lala was preceded in death by her parents; sisters Kriss Yanko, Clara Mae Merando, Elizabeth “Babbie” Morey, and Rose Kritzer; brothers Jim, Pete, Bill, and Earl Jr. “Bull” Morey. Heartfelt thanks and appreciation go to the caring staffs of Harry Hynes Hospice and Via Christi Village Nursing Care. Your professionalism and kindness will never be forgotten.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00am Friday September 28, 2018 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church with Fr. Jerome Spexarth as celebrant. Burial will follow at the Garden of Memories Cemetery in Pittsburg, KS.
Rosary will be recited at 6:00pm Thursday September 27, 2018 at the Bath-Naylor Funeral Home in Pittsburg, KS; family will receive friends following the rosary. Friends may call the funeral home after 2:00pm Thursday. In lieu of flowers the family asks expressions of sympathy to be in the form of memorials to Our Lady of Lourdes Memorial Fund.
