Funeral service for Virginia Ruth (Hill) Shelton, age 79, of Decatur, will be Sunday, March 10, 2019, 2:00 p.m. at Shelton Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Dr. Doug Ripley and Rev. Benny Sivley officiating.

The family will receive friends from 12:30 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. prior to service. Interment will be in East Lawrence Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Shelton, who died Thursday, March 7, 2019, at her residence, was born June 23, 1939, in Washington, DC, to Robert Elkin Hill and Virginia Swann Hill.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Robert Hill, and her parents. Mrs. Shelton worked as a Case Manager for Alabama Medicaid. Mrs. Ruth was a devout Christian with a true servant’s heart and a steadfast belief in the power of prayer.

She was also a very talented artist whose work is displayed and enjoyed in several locales, as well as in many publications, especially Christian children’s books. She is survived by her loving husband, Eugene P. “Gene” Shelton of Decatur; two sons, Robert A. Doherty (Lisa) of Decatur, and James M. Doherty (Monica) of Decatur; stepson, Sam Shelton (Laura) of Pell City; two stepdaughters, Susan Hines (Tom) of Hartselle, and Sherre McKelvey (Greg) of Tuscaloosa; one sister, Gail Watson of Sewanee, TN; one sister-in-law, Connie Hill of Ruston, LA; 12 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. Pallbearers will be grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests memorial donations be made to Gideons International, P. O. Box 5111, Decatur, AL 35601.
