Virginia Singleton Gravely August 14, 1939 – December 26, 2018 Share this obituary Send Flowers View/Sign Guest Book| Send Private Condolences| Send Sympathy Card Virginia Singleton Gravely, 79, of Roanoke, Virginia was called home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, December 26, 2018. Virginia was born on August 14, 1939, in Danville, Virginia to the late Hannah Taylor Singleton and James Singleton. Virginia was raised in Roanoke, Virginia by her grandmother, Belle Stamps Brown.

She was educated in the Roanoke City School System and graduated from Lucy Addison High School. After graduating, she met and married her loving and devoted husband, Alonza “Earl” Gravely in 1961. Virginia traveled with her husband and their family supporting the United States Air Force for 23 years.

She was famous for her cakes, cookies, rolls, and superb cooking skills; always leaving you craving for more and wanting to come back for that good home cooking. Virginia was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother to her family. She enjoyed spending time with her family laughing, talking, and most of all-showing and teaching them the importance of keeping God and family first.

Virginia was a longtime member of Ebenezer AME Church. She served on various committees and sang on the choir. Virginia was honored with Women of the Year Award in 2004 along with other attributes and awards.

Virginia was preceded in death by her husband, Alonza E. Gravely; daughter, Janet Gravely; sister, Lucille Taylor Davis and brother, James Belcher. Virginia leaves behind to honor and cherish her memory her beloved sons, Michael (Ollie) Gravely, Douglas (Christy) Gravely, and Christopher (Rachel) Gravely; grandsons, Reeko Vance, Demetrius Gravely, Devone Gravely, Ethan Gravely, and Bobby Gillespie; granddaughter, Alicia Bannister; great-granddaughters, Aniyah Vance, Evelyn Ramey, Jaleiya Bannister and Destiny Moore; great-grandson, Chanze Bannister; brother, Clyde Singleton; her adored pet dog, Star Gravely; a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins. A special thank you to Carrlisa Martin and the team at Friendship South.

Dr. Mark Kochenderfer, Jolee Preston, NP and the staff at Blue Ridge Cancer Care for the care given to our mother. Funeral service will be held noon Wednesday, January 2, 2019, at Ebenezer AME Church, 1563 Lafayette Blvd. , Roanoke, VA 24017 with the Reverend Percy McIntyre officiating.

The family visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in Williams Memorial Park. Friends may call on Tuesday afternoon for viewing at Hamlar-Curtis Funeral Home.
