Neidig, age 87, died on Saturday, May 4, 2019 at Jefferson Hospital, Washington Township. He was born in Philadelphia Pennsylvania on August 16, 1931 to John L. Neidig and Helen Carroll. In his early years, Walter attended Henry H. Houston Elementary School in the Mt.

Airy neighborhood of Philadelphia. He then attended Theodore Roosevelt Junior High on Washington Lane in the neighborhood of Morton. Walter was in the Class of June 1946, but left high school in the 10th grade to work full time to help support his family.

Walter entered the Naval service on May 21, 1951 at the age of 19. He traveled the world aboard the USS Monrovia. Following the outbreak of hostilities in Korea, Monrovia was recommissioned on November 30, 1950 and joined the Atlantic Fleet’s Amphibious Forces in the spring of 1951 to train for fall operations off Greenland.

On December 27, she departed Norfolk, Virginia for the first of her annual deployments to the Mediterranean. Walter earned the National Defense Service Medal and the Navy Occupation Service Medal “E” during his time in the service. After 3 years, 10 months, and 29 days, he was honorably discharged on April 19, 1955.

He was very proud of his military career and after serving, became a member of the American Legion. Walter worked full time until the age of 85. He was a TV repairman after his time in the Navy and then worked in the security field later in life.

He worked for National Label Company in Lafayette Hill, PA until his retirement in April 2017. Walter was active in community service. He was a lifetime member of the Flourtown Fire Company and Knights of Columbus Santa Maria Council #263 of St. Genevieve Parish in Flourtown.

He was a Grand Knight from 1972 to 1974 and earned the supreme council certificate for recognition of his leadership. Upon retirement Walter relocated to Runsen House in Runnemede NJ to be closer to his family. He enjoyed his time there with his new friends playing bingo and watching the Philadelphia sports teams on TV.

He was predeceased in death by his mother in 1991 and his sister Dina Daroshefski in 2012. He is survived by the following nieces and nephews: Ellen (Jeffrey) Reese, Donna Bowen, Paul Daroshefski and Walter (Kelly) Daroshefski. He is also survived by the following great nieces and nephews and one great great niece: Melissa Reese, Katherine Bowen, Daniel Bowen, Laura Reese, Paul Daroshefski Jr., Nicholas Daroshefski, Timothy Daroshefski, Megan Daroshefski, Zachary Daroshefski and Shaylin Duffield.

There will be a viewing Saturday morning on May 18th from 9 to 10am at Gardner Funeral Home, Runnemede. Funeral Service 10am at the funeral home. Interment private at the request of the family.
