He was lovingly reared by his grandparents, Ishmael and Susan Burgess. His parents, grandparents, and three brothers, Glen Brown, Wendell Brown and Leon Duncan, Jr. all preceded him in death. Wilbert attended school in the Parkersville Community and Howard High School in Georgetown, SC.
At an early age, he joined St. John African Methodist Episcopal Church, where the family worshipped, and remained a member until death. In 1971, Wilbert was united in marriage to the former Miss Ossie Miller. He was employed as a maintenance worker at Brookgreen Gardens, Pawleys Island, for a number of years.
His favorite hobbies were planting, fishing, and hunting. Wilbert was a phenomenal cook and often shared this talent with neighbors and friends. On December 18, 2018, Wilbert departed for eternal life.
He leaves to cherish his lasting memory: his devoted wife of forty-seven years, Mrs. Ossie L. Burgess of Pawleys Island, SC; two beloved daughters, Jennifer E. Knox (Tracy) and Monica Y. Burgess, all of Pawleys Island, SC; his sister, Cozetta Duncan-Foote (James) of Englewood, NJ; one brother, Arnold Duncan (Terri) of Brooklyn, NY; three grandchildren, Katera M. Bromell (Tommy), Savannah, GA, Kayla J. Burgess, Columbia, SC, and Kalia N. Burgess of Pawleys Island, SC; sisters-in-law, Beverly Duncan, both of Brooklyn, NY, Lillian Miller and Linda Williams of Crawfordville, FL, and Marie Harper (Sammy) of Tallahassee, FL; three brothers-in-law, Retired Staff Sgt. Chester Miller (Mary), Choctaw, OK, Retired Staff Sgt. Frankie Miller (Ruby), Hinesville, GA, and Major Miller, Jr. (Lisha) of Crawfordville, FL; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and special friends.
