Mr. Wilbur Boyd Brown, 84, husband to Retha Burch Brown, passed away Monday, November 19, 2018, at home after a prolonged illness. Mr. Brown was born on February 7, 1934, in Olanta, South Carolina, son of the late Preston and Felicia Brown. Mr. Brown was preceded in death by his adoring wife Mary Frances Derham Brown and brother P.C. Brown.

He is survived by his children, Wilbur Boyd Brown, Jr. (Lisa) and Mary Brown Marburger (Eric), and his loving wife Retha Burch Brown and her children Greg Cumbee (Kim), Alan Cumbee and Steven Cumbee. Mr. Brown is also survived by adoring grandchildren, Joshua and Lauren Brown, Grace and Preston Marburger, and Jared (Jordan) and Ali Cumbee. His dear sister Felicia McElveen survives him also.

Mr. Brown attended The Citadel. He continued serving his community and was twice elected mayor of Lake City from 1966-1970 and again from1991-1992. Through his efforts, he helped bring industry including Nan Ya and Talon to the area.

Mr. Brown received many accolades throughout the years as a prominent businessman. As a real estate developer, he built many of the homes in Lake City. He was a respected real estate appraiser relied upon by private and governmental agencies for his expertise throughout the state.

He operated Brown and Company, a real estate brokerage and insurance agency, which began as a family business in 1966. A deacon at the First Baptist Church in Lake City, a Rotarian and a member of the Lion’s Club, Mr. Brown was active in his community. The family will receive friends at Carolina Funeral Home, 215 US Hwy 378 Bypass, Scranton, SC 29591, on Tuesday evening, November 20 from 6:00 until 8:00 PM.

A memorial service will be held at First Baptist Church, Lake City, at 11:00 A.M. on Wednesday, November 21. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Horry County Special Olympics, PO Box 51872, Myrtle Beach, SC 29579.
