William Leon Hyde Sr. March 14, 1921 – February 16, 2019 Share this obituary Send Flowers Upload Photo| View/Sign Guest Book| Send Private Condolences| Send Sympathy Card William Leon Hyde, Sr. passed away on February 16, 2019, 25 days short of his 98th birthday at his home in DeRidder, LA that he shared with his wife Gernie Glorien Aymond who preceded him in death. Leon was the oldest of six children born on March 14, 1921 to John Wesley and Elizabeth Johnson Hyde in Latanier, LA. He proudly served his country in WW II in the Army Air Corps and upon his return from duty married Gernie and began their family: they were married for 68 years when Gernie passed away in June 2014.

Leon also embarked upon his professional career with Esso later to become Exxon in 1946 and after 15 years with the company, he bought an Exxon distributorship from Pete Lacaze in DeRidder, LA and extended his association there with Exxon completing 50 years with only one company before retiring. Leon thoroughly valued hard work, raising cattle on his farm, making Christmas gifts by hand for his grandchildren. He loved gatherings of family and friends at which he regaled all with humorous story telling.

Along with his wife, he was actively engaged in and supported various community, social and professional organizations and participated in all his boy’s high school functions. With his long life, there are many stories well remembered and his family and friends were grateful for a life well lived. Leon is survived by his brother Dick Hyde, DeRidder, LA, and sister, Barbara Graves (George), Deville, LA; three sons, William L. Hyde, Jr. (Claire), Dallas, TX, John L. Hyde (Sandy), DeRidder, LA and Freddie Hyde, DeRidder, LA; 7 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Gernie, brothers Leotis and Billy Hyde, sister Lou Gaspard and son Michael Hyde. Funeral services will be held at Labby Memorial Funeral Home on Lake Charles Highway in DeRidder, LA at 11:00 A.M. on February 19, 2019 with interment following at Beauregard Cemetery. Pallbearers are his sons, grandson Brandon L. Hyde and Michael McKnight and Morris Ellis.

The family wishes to thank Leon’s caregivers Shelly Hyatt, Sondra Schmidt, Cindy Smith and Brighton Bridge Hospice for their loving care and sacrifices. Contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to Beauregard Hospital Auxiliary.
