Amherst – William T. Loughlin, 89, of Amherst, formerly of Massapequa NY, died unexpectedly on Saturday, June 9, 2018 at Baystate Mary Lane Hospital surrounded by his loving family. He leaves behind those he cherished most: his Wife of 67 years, Migdalia (Camacho) Loughlin of Amherst, MA; five sons, Thomas W. Loughlin and his wife Ann Marie of Dunkirk, NY, William P. T. Loughlin and his wife Sharon of Simi Valley, CA, John Steven Loughlin and his wife Lori of West Brookfield, MA, Kevin R. Loughlin and his wife Karen of Massapequa, NY, and James P. Loughlin and his wife Brenda of Canton, GA, his sister, Noreen Kelly of New Port Richey, FL; thirteen grandchildren; Jenna, Brian, Eric, Sean, Elyse, Kelsey, Ryan, Brianna, J.D., Josh, Jordan, William, and Kirin; five great-grandchildren, Reagan, Finley, Fiona, Hanna, and Alex Michael, and his daughter-in-law Anita Loughlin of Troy, NY. He was predeceased by his son, Michael J. Loughlin.

He was born in New York, NY, son of the late Thomas and Juliette Loughlin of New York, NY. William was an Educator, working at Aviation High School in Long Island City, NY for 33 years, and then at York College, City University of NY in Jamaica, NY for 14 years, before retiring in 1984. He earned his Ph.D. from New York University in Sports Psychology, and his MA and BS in Physical Education from City College New York.

He helped create and promote high school wrestling programs in New York State, and was a leader in the United Federation of Teachers. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was a wrestling coach who enjoyed sports, particularly amateur wrestling, international soccer, and baseball.

He enjoyed attending and listening to opera, Broadway musicals, Irish/Celtic music, and attending moe. concerts, a band for which his son James plays percussion. He was also an avid reader, particularly of thriller and crime novels.

William was a corporal in the United States Army, a veteran of the Korean War, specializing in cryptography. A Funeral Mass for William will be held on June 13, 2018 at 10:00AM in the All Saint’s Church in Ware. Everyone is asked to go directly to the church.
