Obituary for Wynell Glass Stokes Wynell Filbert Glass Stokes, age 85, of Linden died October 10, 2018 at DCH Regional Medical Center. Wynell was born December 19, 1932 in Octagon, Alabama. Services will be Saturday, October 13, 2018 at 2:00 at Providence Baptist Church with Rev.

David Stidham and Paul Whitcomb officiating. Burial will follow in Providence Baptist Church cemetery with O’Bryant Chapel Funeral Home directing. Visitation will be at the church one hour prior to the services.

She was preceded in death by her husband Virgil W. Glass; husband, M. C. Stokes; parents S. D. Filbert and Earline Farmer Filbert; sister, Joy Mansfield; infant brother Joey Filbert, and a daughter Brenda Stokes King. She is survived by 6 daughters. Teresa Howell (Tom), Trudi Finley (Robert), Angie Scales (John) Carolyn Maness (Don), Charlotte Flowers, Jackie Glass (Don): Grandchildren, Tracie Sherwood (Jeremy), Cody Howell, Patrick Howell (Mary), Lauren Patrick, Carter Taunton (Jason), Brooks Finley, Joyce Glass, Jenny Burge (David), Cindy Evans (Tim), Nancy Jones (Thyron), Mike Lyles (Ashley).

Keith Lyles (Sherian), Holly Hohnstein (Dave): 24 great grandchildren and 5 great-great grandchildren. Wynell also considered Paula Whitcomb as one of her girls. Wynell was a member of Providence Baptist Church since 1941 where she taught Sunday School for 50 years and was still active in Women’s Missionary Union.

She was Valedictorian of the Linden High School class of 1951 and President of the Student Council. Wynell was also voted Most Intellectual by her classmates. After she and Virgil had 3 girls, she continued her education and earned a Master’s Degree in Elementary Education from Livingston University.

She was active in many clubs which continued throughout her life, including most recently the Linden Garden Club and Study Club. She also volunteered for Southern Care Hospice and other community organizations. Wynell taught school and later went to work for the Dept.

Of Human Res as a social worker. In 1993 she was recognized by the Marengo County Sheriff’s Dept. for Courageous Assistance when a deputy was shot as he assisted her on a call.

She drove the injured deputy to the hospital and that act of courage earned her appointment as a Deputy Sheriff of Marengo County. She lost Virgil, her high school sweetheart and the love of her life in 1990, but several years later she found a new love, M. C. Stokes, and they married in 1997. With this marriage, she gained 4 more daughters and her family grew even more.

She enjoyed traveling with the Stokes’ families and made more wonderful memories. God and family were most important to her. Pallbearers will be Cody Howell, Patrick Howell, Brooks Finley, Jeremy Sherwood, Jason Taunton and Chuck Glass.

Honorary pallbearers are members of the Progressive Sunday School Class at Providence Baptist Church and members of WMU. Flowers will be appreciated, or memorials may be made to Providence Baptist Church, PBC Cemetery Fund or your favorite charity.
