Alma L. Harbour, 97, a former longtime resident of the Forest Grove community, late of Vancouver, Washington, died Thursday evening, December 13, 2018 at her home in Vancouver, Washington. ALMA LAVINA HARBOUR was born February 10, 1921 in Wiley, Colorado, the daughter of the late Orville L. Zimmerman and Cora Myrtle (Starks) Zimmerman. She attended grade school in Rocky Ford, Colorado, living a brief time in Caddoa, Colorado at her grandparents.
She then moved to Canon City, Colorado, where she attended grades seven through twelve. Following her graduation she worked as a housekeeper for Dr. Ernest, before attending Beauty school, both in Pueblo, Colorado. At the start of World War II, she moved to Bremerton, Washington, she met and married Richard Berndt, Sr
They had a son, Richard, who was born in Denver, Colorado. At the end of the War, she returned to Pueblo, Colorado and met James P. Harbour, Jr They were united in marriage in 1946.
They had three children, Carl, JoAnn and James P. Harbour, III. In 1958, the family moved to Oregon, settling in Forest Grove on David Hill. In 1971, they moved into town on 28th Avenue.
James carried the mail through Forest Grove, Gales Creek, Glenwood and Timber, while Alma worked as a nurse caring for newborns at the Forest Grove Community Hospital. Alma was preceded in death by her husband, James, in June of 1999, after celebrating over 53 years of marriage together. In 2016, Alma moved to assisted living in Vancouver, Washington, to be near her daughter and family.
She was an active member of the First Christian Church in Forest Grove, since 1958. Among her special interest, she enjoyed quilting for the community and Veterans. Alma was also an avid reader and loved spending time with her grandchildren.
Alma was also preceded in death by her parents, Orville and Cora Zimmerman; by her two brothers, Gomer and Gene Zimmerman; her three sisters, Mildred Zimmerman, Phyllis Wade and Velma Blackburn and her son, Richard Harbour in September of 2007. Survivors include her three children and their spouses, Carl and Lora Harbour, of Crooked River Ranch, Oregon; JoAnn and Don Goodrich, of Vancouver, Washington and James and Carolyn Harbour, of Las Vegas, Nevada; her sister, Goldie Vitullo, of Florence, Colorado and her brother and sister-in-law, Clyde and Carolee Zimmerman, of Vero Beach, Florida. Also surviving are her eleven grandchildren and their spouses, April and Jim Craig, of Sherwood, Oregon; Allison and Scott Oberg, of Beaverton, Oregon; Jesse and Cherise Harbour, of Vernonia, Oregon; Lindsey and Chris Stevens, of Newberg, Oregon; Carrie and David Dias, of Hillsboro, Oregon; David and Emily Harbour, of Hillsboro, Oregon; Aaron and Jamie Wahl, of Washougal, Washington; Jason Wahl, of Vancouver, Washington; Kevin and Alyssa Harbour, of Forest Grove, Oregon; Kassandra and Greg Zemp, of Las Vegas, Nevada and James Harbour, of Los Angeles, California; seventeen great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
