Obituary for Amy Lynn Cunningham Amy Lynn (Lindsey) Cunningham died peacefully on Tuesday, September 11, 2018. She was at home surrounded by family and her well loved cat, Scarlet. Amy is survived by Scarlet, whom she often described as her favorite child.
She is also survived by her devoted husband, Joe Cunningham, of the home. Amy deeply loved and was adored by her grandchildren, Benjamin, Parker and Ryan Rahman, Kirstin and Megan Cunningham, Chris and Marla Felts. She also leaves behind one brother, Bill Lindsey and is mourned by her children, Holly Chance, Brad and Robert Hudson; stepchildren, Joey Cunningham and Mitzi Elliot.
Amy also will be profoundly missed by her devoted caregiver, Stephanie DeWitt, as well as a host of other close friends and family. Amy Lynn Lindsey Cunningham was born April 29, 1945 in Calico Rock, Arkansas to Helen Margaret Caple and James Lindsey. As a youth Amy was well known for her athletic ability and was one of very few basketball guards to be named “most athletic”.
Amy was married at the age of 19 to Robert Hudson and it was this union which produced her three biological children. This marriage would end in divorce after 8 years. Amy, then aged 28, moved with her three very young children from Mississippi to Arkansas, where she took her very first job outside the home while she simultaneously raised her children as a single parent.
Within two years Amy met Joe Cunningham who described her as “the most beautiful women he had ever seen”. Joe (soon to be known as Peep, after being named that by his grandson, Ben) adored Amy and always treated her as the most beautiful woman in the world for the entirety of their 45 year marriage. On October 20, 1994 Amy was the victim of a hit and run driver and was left a quadriplegic.
She was supported and cared for by a host of friends and family, but her primary caregiver for the rest of her life would be her adoring husband, Joe Cunningham-Peep. Amy loved her friends tremendously and was known among her friends and colleagues as a fun, feisty, sassy friend, who was also generous, giving, and compassionate. She was blessed with numerous close friendships which endured throughout her life.
Amy’s primary focus was her grandchildren. She was supremely close to each of them and worked, with Peep’s loving help, to maintain strong and bonded relationships with them. In spite of the enormous difficulty she had with travel, she (Nana) and Peep made the trip to Springfield, Missouri approximately every 3-4 weeks to visit her grandsons.
Being a Nana was the center of her life and she was, without exception, the best Nana in the world. She will be deeply missed by so many friends and family but her loss will profoundly affect her grandchildren . They adored their Nana and she will continue to live her life shining on through each of them.
There will be a visitation held at Powell Funeral Home Friday evening from 6-8pm. Amy’s Memorial Service will also be at Powell Funeral Home on Saturday, September 15 at 10:00am. A private graveside service for close family and friends only will be held in Calico Rock, Arkansas, Saturday at 2:00pm.
