Anthony Basil Cordero Jr. died peacefully June 30, 2018 at home in Santa Maria surrounded by his loving wife and family. He was born April 26, 1938 in Santa Barbara, CA, the eldest son in a family of eleven children born to Venita and Anthony Cordero Sr He grew up in Santa Barbara and graduated from Santa Barbara High School in 1955, where he was a gifted athlete, especially in track, and set records which stood for more than two decades.
He attended Santa Barbara City College before… Read More » enlisting in the US Air Force in 1957. While in the Air Force, he started a family, which eventually grew to four children. He had a lengthy career as a plumber/pipefitter and worked on several significant local projects, including the Vandenberg Shuttle Pad, Diablo Canyon Power Plant, Mariposa Reina and various oil rigs.
After he retired, he lived for several years in Los Alamos, CA, where he met is wife Sharon Hobson in 1998. Sharon joined him in the Goldwings Motorcycle Club of Lompoc and spent many an afternoon riding with him. He was a passionate fisherman and looked forward to his annual fishing trips with his sons, cousins and nephews to the Eastern Sierras for opening day of trout season.
He was a member of the United Association of Plumbers and Pipefitters Local Union 114 with his younger brother and cousins. He was also formerly a member of the Elks and the Knights of Columbus in Santa Barbara and Santa Maria. He recently celebrated his eightieth birthday with a family gathering at a local restaurant.
He loved spending time with his family and friends and will be remembered for his sly humor, his warm smile, his loving heart and his enduring strength. He is preceded in death by his mother, Venita; his father, Anthony Sr.; his brothers Thomas and Charles and his sister Barbara Barbere. He is survived by his loving wife Sharon Cordero, daughter Venita Johnson (Mark) of Santa Maria, son Anthony Cordero III (Ann) of McKinney, TX, son Jonathan Cordero (Deanna) of Newberry Park, and daughter Maria Cordero of Santa Barbara.
He also leaves behind six grandchildren: Anna Cordero (Dave), Brian Johnson, Austin Cordero, Cameron Cordero, Anthony Cordero IV, and Ciera Cordero; and six great-grandchildren: Kitty, Titus, Anthony V and Isaak Cordero and Evan and Ian Johnson. He is also survived by brothers and sisters, Frances Mullen (Jimmy), Rosie Martinez (Barney), Martha Jaimes (David Sr.), William Cordero Sr., Camille Cordero, Annette Cordero (Chris Rabe) and Antonette Cordero and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and lifelong friends. He will be truly missed at BBQ’s, birthday parties, card games, fishing trips, camping trips, and all other family gatherings.
The family wishes to express their special thanks and appreciation to his granddaughter Anna Cordero for the loving care she gave him in his final days. Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. on Thursday, July 5, 2018 at Dudley-Hoffman Mortuary, 1003 E. Stowell Rd. , Santa Maria, CA.
Visitation will be held prior to the Rosary beginning a 5 pm. Funeral mass will be celebrated Friday, July 6, 2018 at 11 a.m. at St. Louis de Montfort Catholic Church, 1190 E. Clark Ave. , Santa Maria, CA.
Graveside service will follow at Los Alamos Cemetery, 4777 Drum Canyon Rd. , Los Alamos, CA.
