Arthur “Art” Eugene Schrader, 82, of Stillwell was called home to plow the fields of heaven. Born March 9th, 1937 at his childhood home in Stillwell to Fred and Florence (Matt) Schrader, God called him home on February 26th, 2019 from Cleveland Clinic in Ohio. At the age of eight he began his life as a hard worker peddling papers and doing landscaping jobs.

Proud to be a Stillwell Viking, Arthur served as class president and was actively involved in volleyball, baseball, track, and basketball. He was a 10 year 4-H member and later served on the Pleasant township 4-H council. After graduation Arthur chose to serve proudly in the United States Navy, stationed at McGuire Air Force base.

Upon completion of his Navel service he returned to Stillwell where he worked on the Grand Trunk Railroad. While in town one day driving his sister to an appointment, he happened to glance on the most beautiful lady in her iconic red coat. She agreed to meet the suave sailor soon and the rest is history.

Her name is Margo Keene and they wedded on October 12th, 1963. Art honored, cared and loved his bride for over 55 years. Their life together has been filled with many celebrations, unconditional love, trust, faithfulness, and devout service to the Lord.

They have a “small” family of girls and proudly raised seven daughters together in Stillwell, where laughter and joy filled their house and everywhere they went. While truly being the best husband and father, he took on extra roles to best support his family by working 42 years at Modine Manufacturing and landscaping for many local businesses. Additionally, Arthur served as president in the Local 1530 and on the Salem Cemetery Board.

He also served as president at the Members United Credit Union, where he played a key role in transitioning it to Purdue Federal Credit Union of La Porte. He was a lifelong attendee and member of Salem Chapel, where he was baptized. He will be truly missed by his dog who was always by his side, Heidee Schrader, as Art enjoyed the true pleasures of life such as pit fires with his family, camping at Potato “Crick,” bicycling, county fairs, Purdue football games, tractor pulls and farm shows.

Arthur will be fondly remembered for his kindness, gentleness, determination, loyalty, bravery, insights, and joy that he carried with him everywhere. Arthur could be found regularly wearing flannel and a baseball cap, a dog by his side, and always carrying a flashlight. We take his lesson of keeping our hearts warm for others, our caps on for loyalty, and our lights to let God shine our path.

To know Art was to know true joy, Art’s family will continue to share his legacy that is full of jubilation guided by faith; his loving wife Margo Schrader and beloved daughters and sons in laws; Cathy (Thomas) Thomasino of Stillwell, Cindy Lou (Jim) Antrim of La Porte, Caren (Dale) Thomas of La Crosse, Cherie’ Schrader (Lorenzo) Medrano of Chicago, Christie Schrader of Stillwell, and Callie (Drew) Schrader -Dwornik of Michigan City. 13 grandchildren; Tommy Thomasino, Dakota Cook, Bailee Cook, Schasta Antrim, Lois Thomas, Clae Antrim, Webster Thomas, Logan Dwornik, Cole Antrim, Hayden Dwornik, Floral Antrim, Zofia Dwornik, and Gideon Dwornik; and son-in-law, Michael Cook. Received with warm embraces in heaven by his parents, sister, daughter Carol Cook, and grandson Lattigo.

Visitation will be 4 – 8 pm (CST) on Wednesday, March 6, 2019 and from noon -1pm (CST) on Thursday at Salem Chapel United Methodist Church. We welcome all friends and family to celebrate this wonderful man in a service officiated by Pastor Brian White that will be held at 1 pm (CST) on Thursday, March 7, 2019 at Salem Chapel United Methodist Church, 2802 E. SR 4, La Porte. Burial with full military honors will follow at Salem Cemetery in Salem Heights.
