Arvene Griffey, age 89, a resident of Cleveland, passed away Wednesday, May 22, 2019 in a local hospital. Mrs. Griffey was the daughter of the late Martha Ward Elliott and James Jonas Elliott. Her husband, Milton Griffey, her grand daughter, Amy Griffey Pigg, her sisters, Corine Johnson, Judy Davis and her brothers, Laffe Elliott and Johnny Elliott also preceded her in death.

Mrs. Griffey was retired from the Bradley County School System, serving many years as the Cafeteria Manager for Trewhitt Elementary School. She enjoyed cooking, traveling to the beach and she was an avid reader. Most of all she loved being a grandmother and spending time with her family.

Mrs. Griffey was a long time member of the North Cleveland Church of God and the Unity Sunday School Class. Survivors include her daughter, Lorie Gassel and her husband Brian of Atlanta, Georgia, her sons, James Griffey and his wife S. Dianne Griffey, Terry Griffey and his wife Sonia Griffey all of Cleveland, her grandchildren, Andrea Shope and her husband Jamie, Sarah Medlin and her husband Clark, Debbie Moore and her husband Josh, Brent Griffey and his wife Andra, Melissa Rickmeyer and her husband Paul, Amanda Griffey, Christopher Griffey and his wife April, Lauren Gassel and Morgan Gassel, her 28 great grandchildren, her 1 great great grandchild, her sisters, Joyce Clevenger of Nashville, Tennessee, Florine Stiltner of Grundy Virginia, her brother, James Jonas Jr. and his wife Shirley of Ohio and several nieces and nephews also survive. The Remembrance of Life Service will be conducted on Saturday, May 25, 2019 at 2:00 P. M. at the Jim Rush Funeral and Cremation Services North Ocoee Chapel with family and friends officiating.

Entombment will follow in the Sunset Memorial Gardens with Brent Griffey, Chris Griffey, Tucker Shope, Jonathan Pigg, Matthew Pigg, Joseph Moore, Clark Medlin and Brian Gassel serving as casket bearers. The family request that in lieu of flowers, Memorials be made to the Mitochondrial Disease Foundation (UMDF) www. umdf.org in Arvene Griffey’s name.
