Bambi Lynn Childers Holmes was born July 1, 1958 and gained her heavenly wings Thursday, February 14. Born to Loyd and Bobbie Childers, Bambi grew up in Morgan County, attended Eva and Brewer schools, and graduated from Athens State University. She taught elementary school for several years, then worked as a terminal manager for Western Express, where she retired after 17 years.
Bambi was preceded in death by her father, Loyd Childers. She is survived by her mother, Bobbie Massey Childers; one son, Zachary Wayne Holmes (Erika); three sisters, Tammy Love, Debi Murphy (Peewee), Tina Kimbrell (Jim); and one brother, Randy Childers (Wendy). The greatest joy in Bambi’s life was her son Zachary.
She was his greatest supporter and football fan and attended his games as often as she could. Bambi also took great pride in being the world’s best aunt. Each of her nieces and nephews was loved greatly by her: Kerri and Gary Greenhill, Kaine and Donnie Story, Bridgette and Jason Henderson, Alison Love, Clay and Angela Love, Anne-Kathryn and Zack Vereno, Nathan Kimbrell, Alexandra Kimbrell, Jake and Maggie Kimbrell, Sadie and Parker Black, Heather and Harrel Owens, and Chad Childers.
She also loved to spoil 8 great-nephews and 3 great-nieces. Bambi’s favorite activities always involved her nieces and nephews. She supported them during countless ballgames, school performances, graduations, church events, and moving days.
She was a constant of encouragement to her entire family. She also loved to volunteer her time and talents to others, working as a volunteer for Comfort Care Hospice before she was sick. She enjoyed making cards and sending them to family and friends.
Bambi loved being a member of Tunsel Road Baptist Church. The family would like to thank the members of the church for the care and love shown to Bambi during her illness. We would also like to express appreciation to the BMT unit at UAB Hospital, Dr. Shah and CCI of Decatur, and the staff of Comfort Care Hospice, particularly Terry Denton and Tina Smith, for the loving care given to Bambi.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made to Red Mountain Grace Nonprofit Organization, 2120 16th Avenue South #300R, Birmingham, Alabama 35205. A celebration of Bambi’s life will be held at Tunsel Road Baptist Church Sunday, Feb. 17th.
