Once her five children were grown she began working as an EKG technician at Crittenden Hospital and eventually was promoted to director of that department for 10 years. When she was widowed suddenly in 1987, she formed a grief support group at Christ Lutheran Church where she was a member for 52 years. She was the Chairman, Board of Social Ministry, for her church for 11 years, As Chairman, she helped found the Good Shepherd Coalition, a non-profit organization, that remains dedicated to helping the many underprivileged families in Macomb County.
She began volunteering at William Beaumont Hospital Troy and in 1992 was chosen to be the Executive Chairman of the Volunteer Organization. As Chairman she was known for her innovations and ability to inspire others to volunteer. She believed that the stimulus of helping others could enhanced a person’s well-being by drawing the warmth and gratitude of the recipient.
The simple joy and energy of volunteering would lead to a longer and happier life. She continued her volunteering until the day she died. At age 97, she created beautiful hand-crafted sympathy cards for families who lost loved ones in the Emergency Department.
“When my husband passed away in 1987, I received so many cards and kept them all. It meant a lot to me to go back and read them and help me get through that period of grief”.
