Barbara Chalmers December 19, 1945 – February 19, 2019 Share this obituary Sign Guestbook Barbara Jean Chalmers, daughter of the late Alexander and Lorraine Reaves, was born on December 19, 1945 in Wilson County, Rocky Mount, North Carolina. She departed this life on Tuesday, February 19, 2019. Barbara left Rocky Mount, North Carolina and moved to Newark, New Jersey, where she graduated from Weequahic High School.

She then reunited with her old friend, Leonard Chalmers from Sanford, NC and eventually got married on October 20, 1967. She started her married life in New York raising three children, Darrell, Leonard (Popa), Jr. and Torry. Barbara worked as an executive assistant for CUNY completing 25 years of service.

She also attended and graduated from Bronx Community College earning an Associates Degree. She loved to go to Atlantic City with her longtime friend, Mary Birch every chance she got. Barbara was a vibrant woman, well traveled and was always on the move somewhere.

She was the family linchpin that held the family together and believed in educating everyone around her. Barbara is preceded in death by: her parents, Alexander and Lorraine Reaves; her sister, Vera Reaves-Conley; and her granddaughter, Destiny Faith Chalmers.
