Exeter – Barbara B. Tompkins, 88, a resident of RiverWoods of Exeter, formerly of Rye, died peacefully, Tuesday, February 26, 2019 at her residence at RiverWoods. She was born October 18, 1930 in Waco, TX, a daughter of the late Guy and E. Dorothy (McAtee) Blackwell. Barbara was raised in Houston, TX and graduated from St. Joseph’s School of Nursing in 1951.

She met her husband Richard Tompkins while he was in aviator training with the United States Air Force at Ellington AFB in Houston. They settled in Rye in 1961 after Dick was transferred to Pease AFB. Barbara was a volunteer with IMEC, a nonprofit organization providing developing countries with quality medical equipment to improve healthcare.

She also served as one of the Pease Greeters, spent many hours volunteering at Webster at Rye and was an active participant in many Red Cross Blood Drives. Family members include her husband of over 64 years, Richard Tompkins of Exeter, her sons, Deane Tompkins and his wife Diane of Torrance, CA and Randy Tompkins and his wife Nancy of Greenland her grandchildren, Diana Guy and her husband Cory, Brian Tompkins and his wife Cherise , Sean Tompkins and his wife Jennifer, great grandsons, Camden Tompkins, Evan Tompkins, Quinn Tompkins and William Guy. Services will be held at 2 PM Thursday March 14, 2019 in the Great Bay Room at 7 RiverWoods Drive, Exeter.
