Barbara Powell Le Sage passed away in Arroyo Grande on June 19, 2018, at the age of 84. She is predeceased by her husband, Douglas Le Sage; her parents, Steven Charles Powell and Dorothy Powell; her twin brother, Steve Powell, Jr.; brother-in-law, James Le Sage; and nephew, Jimmy Le Sage. Barbara is survived by her daughters: Lisa Le Sage and Lori Hillman; son-in-law, Donovan Hillman; grandson, Steven Hillman; sisters-in- law: Dianne Powell and Ruth Le Sage; nephews: Steve Powell and Bill Le Sage; nieces: Alyson McCain, Leigh Kidd and Sallie Le Sage; and many grand-nephews and nieces.

Barbara was born in Selma, Alabama in 1933. While attending college in Montgomery, Alabama, she met her husband Doug and they married in 1952 in Alabama. They first moved to Boston for a couple of years, where Doug was finishing his service in the U.S. Air Force.

They then moved to Woodland Hills, California, and Doug worked with his father’s Real Estate and Contracting Business in the Los Angeles region. The Le Sage Enterprise developed the Le Sage Rivera Golf and Mobile Home Park in Grover Beach in 1962 and in 1964, the family moved to Arroyo Grande. Barbara has been a devoted and active life member of the South County Historical Society for 41 years.

She supported the establishment of the SCHS Heritage House and Garden in Arroyo Grande, where you would very often see her gently caring for the gardens. She also helped with projects for the SCHS museum and school house. Barbara was an librarian for many years, serving at the South County Library in Arroyo Grande and also served with the Friends of the Library, volunteering at the Book Fairs.

For over 25 years she was a member of the AG Women’s Club and the Beta Sigma Phi sorority. Barbara had immense appreciation for literature and art. Along with her husband Doug, she was a patron of the Buffalo Bill Historical Center in Cody, Wyoming.

In their retirement years, Barbara and Doug often visited with families near and far, and traveled to several vacation spots. Her greatest joy was the gathering of families and friends. A memorial honoring Barbara will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, June 30, 2018, at the Arroyo Grande Heritage House and Garden, 126 Mason Street, Arroyo Grande.

In lieu of flowers, donations will be accepted at the South County Historical Society, P.O. Box 633, Arroyo Grande, 93421-0633. Condolences for the family may be offered online.
