Obituary for Benjamin Scott Marshall “Ben” Ben Marshall, of Spartanburg, SC, beloved son of Liz and Dan Marshall, died Sunday, September 2, 2018, at the age of 28. Ben graduated with honors from the University of South Carolina, with a major in political science and a minor in business, but found his true passion, organic farming, while volunteering at City Roots Urban Farm in Columbia. After graduation he became the farm manager at Jones Valley Teaching Farm in Birmingham, Alabama.

He planned to have his own sustainable homestead one day, complete with farmland, fruit trees, chickens and goats. His respect for all living things was evident in his careful stewardship of the natural world, and his love of animals. Traveling in his 20 year-old Toyota T-100 was always a priority when he had time off.

He drove across country several times, with family, with friends and solo. His beautiful photographs captured his journeys. In the summer of 2017, he and his father took a trip to Iceland, made more memorable by the subsequent medical issues.

Ben had innate wisdom that belied his 28 years. He was an “old soul”. He embraced life with curiosity and joy, and was never afraid to follow his own heart or take a new path.

Ben connected with people easily due to his genuine interest, his compassion and his ready smile. He had many friends, hobbies and interests, but family was first and foremost in his life. He was smart, funny and kind.

His memory will be cherished by those who knew and loved him. Visitation will be 2:00-3:30 PM Friday, September 7, 2018, at Floyd’s Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 E. Main St., Spartanburg, SC 29307 with a service honoring his life following at 4:00 PM, conducted by The Rev. Gordon Raynal, Mr. Greg Melon, and Dr. Charles Bebko.
