Bernard “Bernie” Thompson, age 89 of King, WI formerly of Platteville, WI passed away on March 14, 2018 at The Wisconsin State Veterans Home. Bernie was born in Argyle, WI on April 1, 1928 the son of C.F. and Adeline (Julson) Thompson. He graduated from Argyle High School in 1946.
He entered the United States Navy in July of 1946 and served as an Electronics Tech on destroyers in the Pacific until his honorable discharge in July of 1948. Bernie married W. Mae Penniston on July 16, 1947. Mae… Read More » preceded him in death on October 21, 1996.
Bernie graduated from Wisconsin State College at Platteville in 1955 with a B.S. in Math with minors in Chemistry and Biological Science. He worked at Burgess Battery Factory for a number of years before going to John Deere in Dubuque, IA for over 20 years. After retiring, he worked for Rountree Realty.
He was a member of Platteville United Methodist Church, The Platteville Jaycees, Conservation Club, Mining Museum, American Legion, Elks, Masons, and Shriners. Bernie served his community on the Platteville Area Industrial Development Corp, Planning and Zoning Commission, the Board of Review, Parks and Recreation, and the Platteville School Board. He served the state on a Governor Appt.
Land Use Task Force with the Department of Transportation and also on the examining board for Architects, Engineers, Designers, and Land Surveyors. Bernie is survived by his five children: Gwen Thompson of Madison, WI, Dr. Jeff (Sandy) Thompson of La Crosse, WI, Judy (Charley) Errthum of Glen Haven, WI, Sue (Andy) McConnell of Brookfield, WI, and Tom (Susan) Thompson of La Crosse; his grandchildren: Ben (Tari) Errthum, Kimberly Errthum, Bradley (Andrea) Errthum, Drs. Rachel (Nathan) Thompson-Fleming, Drs.
Nathan (Elizabeth) Thompson, Sam (friend: Anna) Thompson; Mallory Colby, Lissy (Beau Tremitiere) McConnell, Alex and Zack Thompson; his step-grandchildren: Coral and Amber Owen-Routledge; great-grandchildren: Raymond, Allison, and Collin Errthum, Maelee Colby, Eloise and Clementine Thompson, and Vanessa and Quinton Errthum; one special nephew: Gene (Cindy) Wheeler; a sister-in-law: Iola Thompson; two brothers-in-law: Wayne (Barb) Penniston and Keith Penniston; and many nieces, nephews, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; his mother and father-in-law: Howard (Paloma) Penniston; one sister: Frances (Woodrow) Wheeler; three brothers: Donald, Robert (Marion), and Richard (Dorothy) Thompson; two brothers-in-law: Dallas Judy and Earl Penniston; and a sister-in-law: June Penniston. Private family services and burial will be held at Woodlawn Cemetery in Argyle, WI.
