Obituary for Betty J. Vandertulip Betty Jane Vandertulip, 91, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, April 25, 2018 at Christian Care Center, Mesquite, TX. Betty loved to sing hymns and listen to Christian music. Her passion was reading and studying God’s word.
She had a quiet time every morning and prayed for each of her sons, daughter-in-law’s, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Betty was born on September 20, 1926 in Paris, Tennessee to Joe Hampton Irvan and Charline Brisendine. Her parents moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico where she later met and married John Vandertulip on June 11, 1949.
Their marriage lasted 51 years until his death in 2000. Together they raised four sons; Don, Clay, Robert and Richard. On August 21, 1955, the family moved to Austin, Texas.
They were active members at Hyde Park Baptist Church. The summer of 1968 the family relocated to El Paso, Texas. Betty and John were active members of First Baptist Church and Coronado Baptist Church in El Paso.
In 1987, Betty and John retired to Hide Away Lake. Betty loved counseling inmates and spouses in their Prison Ministry. She also spent time ministering to young unwed mothers.
Their ministries led them to travel to Australia, Hawaii and New Zealand. There they made many new friends. As John’s health declined, they moved to a Retirement Community in Tyler where they attended services at Green Acres Baptist Church.
Betty moved to Christian Care Center April, 2009. She remained active and attended Grand View Baptist Church until 2013 as she dealt with advancing dementia. Betty enjoyed spending time with her 13 grandchildren and spouses and 19 great-grandchildren.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents Joe Hampton and Charline Irvan, husband John J. Vandertulip, grandson Josiah Vandertulip and great-grandson Bryce Zeiner. She is survived by her sons Don (Ginny) of San Antonio, Texas, Clay (Pam) of El Paso, Texas, Robert (Louise) of Irving, Texas and Richard (Sandra) of Round Rock, Texas. Other family includes twelve grandchildren and their spouses, eighteen great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to extend their appreciation to the many Christian Care Center staff at McMillan, Bentley, Moore and the Courtyard and most recently the caregivers in the Special Care Unit and Hospice. Also a special thank you to the sitters from Comfort Keepers. A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 28, 2018 at 10:30 am in the Christian Care Center Chapel, 950 Wiggins Pkwy, Mesquite, Texas.
Graveside service will follow at 2:00 pm at Dover Cemetery in Van, Texas on Van Hwy (110) at Interstate Hwy 20.
