POTOSI – Betty L. Meighan, age 91, of Potosi, passed away on Monday, April 9, 2018, at Orchard Manor Nursing Home, rural Lancaster. She was born on February 7, 1927, in Cassville, the daughter of Ray and Pearl (Burkett) Schultz. In her younger years, Betty rode horses and performed in rodeos, horse shows, and led harness horses to the starting gate at the Bloomington Fair.

In 1953, they moved to a farm in Waterloo Township which became the family farm. In 1955, Oscar suddenly passed away, which left Betty and her daughter, Kathy, to operate the farm. They milked cows, raised pigs, chickens, and later, sheep.

In 1971, Kathy and her husband, Douglas McCartney, farmed with Betty. After Doug’s passing in 1980, Betty and Kathy operated the farm. Betty attended and supported St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Burton.

She was a veracious reader and enjoyed stamp collecting. Survivors include her daughter Kathy (James Koeller) McCartney; a sister-in-law, Darlene Meighan; nephews: Duane (Cindy) Heda; Monroe (Betty) Snyder; Darrell (Eleanor) Snyder; Michael (Laurie) Meighan; Jeff (Susan) Meighan; nieces: Judith Sagan; Darlene (Eugene “Gene”) Myers; Carol Ann (Vernon) Kruse; Sherry (Jim) Fuller; other relatives and friends. Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Oscar; a son-in-law, Douglas McCartney; a sister, Janice (Frank) Heda; a brother-in-law, Howard Meighan; two sisters-in-law: Anna (Lavern) Stoney; Alice (Kenneth) Snyder.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 14, 2018, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Burton with Pastor David Froemming officiating. Burial will be in Dodge Cemetery, Beetown Township. Family and friends may call on Friday, April 13, 2018, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Martin Schwartz Funeral Home & Crematory in Lancaster.
