Betty Lou Burns, 70, of Mt. Gilead passed away Saturday, May 18, 2019 in her home. Her funeral will be 5 PM Thursday in the Stanly Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Gary McCollough and Rev.

Chip McAulay officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the funeral service at Stanly Funeral and Cremation Care. Burial will be on Friday, May 24, at 11 AM at Jones Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery in Sanford with a visitation to follow at Flat Springs Baptist Church Fellowship Hall in Sanford.

Born September 5, 1948 in Lee County, NC, she was the daughter of the late Guy Lawton Burns and Fannie Mae Godfrey Burns. She was a 1967 graduate of Sandford Central High School, a 1971 graduate of Methodist College with a B. A. degree and a 1981 graduate of N. C. A. & T. University with a Masters of Science in Early Childhood Education. In 1970-1971 she was elected to Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges in recognition of outstanding merit and accomplishment as a student at Methodist College.

Betty Lou was a member of Flat Springs Baptist Church where she was a member of the Chancel Choir, taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School for 1st and 2nd Grades, and belonged to the WMU Mission Prayer Circle. In addition, she belonged to the Senior Adult Ministry, and did scrapbooks for this group. Ms. Burns started the Samaritan’s Purse O. C. C. shoebox ministry at her church.

She is a former member of the Jubilee Choir of Sanford. She was teacher in the Montgomery County Schools for 33 ½ years. Ms. Burns was a member of the Lee County Retired School Personnel and served as the community participation chair.

Betty Lou also was a member of the Women’s Club of Sanford, where she was Club Woman of the year in 2014 and was a past club co-secretary and did the scrapbook for the club. Ms. Burns loved teaching children. She was an avid stamp collector and in 1989 Betty Lou got the 1st Post Mark of Town Creek Indian Mound.

She is survived by daughters Sabrina Beasley-Cline and Nora Beasley, both of Mt. Gilead, sister Lora Mae Burns Culberson of Sanford, and 2 grandchildren Caroline Beasley and Amaya Jones. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the American Red Cross, 243 W. Main Street, Albemarle, NC 28001 or to Caroline Cares, PO Box 173, Mt.

Gilead, NC 27306. Stanly Funeral and Cremation Care of Albemarle is entrusted with arrangements.
