Billy Ray James, 71, of Lowndesville, husband of the late Shirley Driver James, died Tuesday, July 10, 2018 at the Abbeville Area Medical Center. He was born in Lowndesville to Willie Mae Morrow James and the late Bill James. A 1965 graduate of Calhoun Falls High School, Billy Ray served his country in the SC National Guard.

He began his working career as a self-employed cabinet maker and retired from A & A Portable Building, Inc. in Starr with over 35 years of service. Billy Ray was a man of few words who enjoyed being outside ‘piddling’ in his yard and helping others with his handy man and carpentry skills. He was a long time member of Lowndesville Baptist Church.

In addition to his wife and father, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Dawn Lynn James; a brother, Randy James; and a sister, Mary Ann Clardy. Billy Ray is survived by his children, Eddie Driver (Annette) of Abbeville, Lisa Driver and Sally Taylor (Brad), all of Lowndesville; six sisters, Lois Brantley, Betty Driver (Kenneth) all of Antreville, Lizzie Hozey (Danny) of Calhoun Falls, Darlene James, Elaine Alexander (Jimmy Neal) and Delma “Debbie” Waller (Rick) all of Greenwood; five grandchildren, Tiffany Driver, Justin Richey, Breanna Osborne, Brayden Taylor, and Gracie Taylor; and three great-grandchildren, Dakota Holmes, Anzleigh Hutchinson and Bryson Driver. The family will receive friends 6:00pm – 8:00pm, Thursday, July 12, 2018 at Harris Funeral Home, Abbeville Chapel.

Funeral services will be held 1:00pm, Friday, July 13, 2018 at Lowndesville Baptist Church with Rev. Fred Griggs and Rev. Scotty Willoughby officiating.

Burial will follow in Smyrna UMC Cemetery. Memorial contributions, in memory of Mr. James, may be sent to Lowndesville Baptist Church Building Fund, PO Box 70, Lowndesville, SC 29659. The family is at the home in Lowndesville.
