Obituary for Birdie Mae “Gert” Stewart Birdie Mae “Gert” Stewart, age 83, of Elizabethton, TN went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, October 11, 2018 at Sycamore Shoals Hospital. A native of Elizabethton, she was the daughter of the late Swift and Mae Bierd Brewer. She was a loving mother, grandma and sister and she was of the Baptist faith.

“Gert” loved to cook and loved children. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Stewart; a son, William Carl Benge and a brother, Glenn Brewer. Those left to cherish her memory include a daughter, Barbara Varner, Bluff City; grandchildren, Norman Church and wife Jessica, West Virginia, Gerald Church, Bluff City, Sara Hayes and husband Donnie, Hickory, NC and Shannon Church, West Virginia; a sister, Mary Blevins, Bluff City; four brothers, Larry Brewer and wife Linda, Elizabethton, Harrold Brewer and wife Barbara, Buster Brewer and Buck Brewer, all of Roan Mountain; a niece, Trease Callahan, a great-nephew, Connor Callahan, both of Elizabethton and a special friend, Ray Vance, Roan Mountain.

Several great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild also survive. A service to honor the life of Birdie Mae “Gert” Stewart will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Monday, October 15, 2018 in the Rhododendron Chapel, Roan Mountain. The family will receive friends at the Rhododendron Chapel from 12:00 Noon until 2:00 P.M. on Monday prior to the service.

Interment will follow the funeral service in Taylor Cemetery, Buck Mountain Road, Elk Park, NC. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. The family would like to express a special thank you to the doctors and staff at Sycamore Shoals Hospital for their care to “Gert” and to her family and friends.
