Mr. Carl J. Edmondson, 79 of Barney passed away Monday, March 11, 2019 at Archbold Medical Center. Mr. Edmondson was born August 21, 1939 near Morven on his Grandfather Enoch Edmondson’s farm, with his twin sister, Carolyn to the late John David and Fannie Mae Bourquin Edmondson. He grew up on a family farm near Barney and attended school at Barney Grammer School and Morven High School from which he graduated in 1957.

After a short time, he and a good friend, Danny Strickland joined the United States Air Force. Upon the death of his father, he left the Air Force and returned home. He studied at South Georgia Technical School in Americus, and soon began his life’s work managing golf courses.

He and Shirley Gay were married April 21, 1963 and she is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Walton Samuel Gay of Colquitt County, both deceased now. After living for a short time in Macon, they settled in Montgomery, Alabama to live and work for many years. Mr. Edmondson was active in his professional field and served as president of the Alabama Golf Superintendents Association.

After many years in Montgomery, Mr. Edmondson retired to Brooks County, but was soon busy with the Sunset Country Club and the Quitman Country Club where he rebuilt the course and added several new holes. He was a consultant in his late years on greens management with a golf course in Nashville while living in his mother’s house in Barney. Mr. Edmondson was converted to the Christian faith after a life threatening health crisis in the 1990’s and was active in the Friendship Baptist Church in Barney.

He enjoyed fishing for many years and was an avid gardener. Mr. Edmondson was a member of the Shriner’s Organization and the Masonic Service Association. Survivors include his wife, Shirley Gay Edmondson; son, John David Edmondson; three grandchildren, Stephen David Edmondson (Presley Covington), Stephanie Inarae Edmondson, and Alexandria Inarae Edmondson; one brother, Stephen William (Craig McNeely) Edmondson.

Mr. Edmondson was preceded in death by his sister, Carolyn Edmondson Holcombe. A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 16, 2019 at 12:00 p.m. at Friendship Baptist Church in Barney with Rev. Steven Haineault officiating.

The family will be receiving friends one hour prior to the service. Mr. Edmondson’s cremains will be buried at Campground Cemetery in Morven. He was involved in the Shriners Children’s Hospitals organization.
