Obituary for Mr. Carl Kovacs III, Ret. UPD UTICA – Mr. Carl Kovacs III, Retired/Utica Police Department, age 74, passed away on Saturday, November 3, 2018 at The Pines at Utica Center for Nursing & Rehabilitation. Born in Utica on July 6, 1944, Carl was the son of the late Carl and Gladys (Rakowski) Kovacs.

He was raised and educated locally. A veteran of the United States Army, he was very proud of his time in service to his country. On July 15, 1967 he married the former Barbara Pooley with whom he shared 51 years.

As a couple, they spent time together as compatible companions, and they appreciated one another. In 1971 Carl was appointed to the Utica Police Department, and during his 31 years on the force, he was dependable and admired by his fellow officers. He retired in 2002 as a Master Patrolman.

He was a member of the American Legion Post #229. Carl is survived by his wife, Barbara; his son, John W. Kovacs; and his brother and sister-in-law, Gary and Susan Kovacs. He also leaves his nieces, nephews, godchildren, and his feline friends.

He was predeceased by his infant son Carl Kovacs IV in 1971, his brother, William J. Kovacs, and mother-in-law, Ida “Edith” Pooley. The family is grateful to the staff of The Pines who compassionately cared for Carl during his time of need. In keeping with Carl’s wishes, there will be no public visitation.
