Mrs. Carole Key Merritt, 87, passed away peacefully on March 27, 2019. She was born in 1931 to Sidney Russel Key and Minnie Ida Mooney. Her family consisted of six sisters and three brothers all deceased except for Virginia Key Rutledge Nelson of Mt.

Pleasant, SC. Carole graduated from Pilot Mountain High School where she participated in music, dance and sports, and Jones Business College of High Point. She worked as secretary to Judge Ray Deal before working at Western Electric.

She married Herbert Bell Baker, Sr. and they had two sons, Herbert, Jr. who is deceased and Alan Dean Baker of Virginia. She had one grandson, Stephen Alan Baker and wife, Lindsay also of Virginia. In 1972, she married the James Earl Merritt, who passed in 2015.

They lived in Jamestown, NC and Pine Knoll Shores, NC. Carole was a member of Guilford County Horticultural Society for 24 years. She enjoyed touring other gardens and attending symposiums.

She was a member of the Methodist Church. A private visitation and funeral will be held for family and close friends at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, April 3, 2019 at Hayworth-Miller Kernersville Chapel, 141 Smith Edwards Road, Kernersville, NC 27284, with Rev. Charles Penley officiating.

The family will receive friends one hour prior. A private burial will follow at a later date at Sedge Garden United Methodist Church Cemetery, 764 Sedge Garden Rd.
