Charlene’s funeral service will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, September 27th at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton. The family will greet friends from 5-7 p.m., Wednesday, September 26th at the funeral home. Her burial will be at the Newton Union Cemetery in Newton following the funeral service and a lunch at the funeral home.

Memorials to the Jasper County Animal Rescue League and Humane Society or to Mercy Hospice – Newton may be left at the funeral home. If you are mailing the memorial to the funeral home please add, Attn: Catlett Family on the envelope. Charlene Kay Slycord Catlett, the daughter of Paul Eugene and Maurine Louise Billman Slycord was born on December 2, 1946 in Newton, Iowa.

She was a graduate of Newton High School in 1965. Charlene was united in marriage to Clifford D. “Cliff” Piatt on November 4, 1967 in Lancaster, Missouri. They were blessed with two daughters, Deborah and Shelley.

Charlene was later united in marriage to Donald “Don” Catlett on December 27, 1980 in Newton. She worked 35 years at the Skiff Medical Center in Newton. She retired in 2001 where she had been the materials manager/purchasing agent.

She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of VFW Post 1655. Charlene enjoyed being with her family and friends, bowling, Bingo, playing cards and going fishing. Charlene died on Thursday, September 20, 2018 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

She was 71. She was preceded in death by her parents, first husband, Clifford D. Piatt; step daughter, Cora Breckenridge; step granddaughter, Tera Breckenridge; sister, Janet Slycord and brother, Phillip Slycord. Those left to cherish Charlene’s memory are her daughters, Deborah (Chris) Van Sickle of Newton and Shelley Beck of Ankeny; her step daughter, Teresa Pelock of Newton; granddaughters, Morgan Beck of Ankeny, Erin Van Sickle of Newton and Erika Van Sickle of Newton; step granddaughters, Kasi Breckenridge of Iowa, Jessica Pelock of Newton and Olivia Pelock of Newton; her three step great-grandchildren, Matilyn, Kale and Adalie; sister, Joyce Slycord of Newton; brother, Paul (Karen) Slycord, Jr. of Altoona and her special friend, Donald Catlett of Newton.
