Charles A. Whatmough, 91, of Pawtucket, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family early Sunday morning. He was the beloved husband of Joann E. (Vincent) Whatmough and they were inseparable in their 52 years together. He was born in Amsterdam, NY and moved to Pawtucket at a young age, and spent the rest of his life in the Pawtucket area.

He had been employed as a bricklayer/mason and was a member of the Allied Crafts Workers Union – local #3, and was a union member in good standing for over 50 years. He was a WWII veteran, serving in the U.S. Navy as a cook on a Troop Transport ship that served the Pacific theatre for 2 years, and he served his remaining time aboard the Submarine Tender U.S.S. Nereus (AS-17) until his discharge. His Naval training as a cook became a lifetime of love as he enjoyed cooking for the immediate and extended family, and for the numerous guests that would always find a warm welcome when they came to visit.

He was a great friend and loved to talk about a wide range of subjects. He was a History enthusiast who enjoyed researching U.S. historic battles. He also collected antique watches and loved to play cribbage with anyone who was willing to challenge him.

Besides His wife he leaves a daughter, Barbara A. Whatmough of Pawtucket, and son James P. Whatmough of Lincoln, and 2 Granddaughters, Jessica Hazen of San Diego, CA and Julie Whatmough of Smithfield, RI. He was the father of the late Charles A. Whatmough Jr. and the late David R. Whatmough. He also leaves an extended family of nieces and nephews that he was very close with and loved as his own children.

A Gathering of Remembrance will be held on Saturday March 2nd, from 1 until 3 PM, in the Charles Coelho Funeral Home with a Funeral Service at 2:30 PM.
